Boston 2014 Journal Part 2- Cool Names

As I've mentioned in past journals, I am fascinated by maps. Especially when planning a vacation that involves all 6 of the New England states, I've learned a lot just by studying maps, and even better than that, I've discovered even more of the coolest names of towns, cities, even streets. Here is a listing of the coolest I've seen so far:
Kittery
Kennebunk
Sandwich
Nantucket
Nobscusset
Mystic
Chappaquiddick
Sleeping Giant State Park
Pawtucket
Merrimack
Camels Hump State Park
Bangor
Allagash

There are just so many interesting place names, I could go on and on, but lucky for you, reader, I won't!

I am now merely a week away from my journey, and not a panic attack in sight!! My first trip to NYC had my head spinning and heart pounding with fear the day before...but I think so much of that was the unknown. I have gained a lot of experience with travel since then, although the airplane part is still going to be a somewhat new experience, since it's been 28 years!!

My general plans are made, many lists completed, even a bit of packing is done! I've signed up for all the pertinent electronic tools to make the adventures go smoothly, put my little numbered stickers on my map, and I feel that the bulk of my planning is complete!

And so the week countdown begins.....

Nessy Takes Manhattan...again!!!

21 September 2011

Ok, so I know I just went there not even 6 months ago, but I loved New York City so much, I couldn't wait to get back there!!! I told everyone who asked me, how it was one of the most amazing things I have ever done, EVER.
So, when telling two of my dearest friends about it, they mentioned that they had both always wanted to go there, I jokingly suggested: Let's go!!! I'll leave this minute!!  Hehehe.... No really, I would have gone that minute!! I didnt expect them to take it as seriously, but they did. OhMyGoodness...my mind started spinning immediately at the thought of another trip!!
My first trip to NYC, as you have read in my other notes was a 4 day bus tour, basically a day to drive down, two days in Manhattan, and a day to drive back. I don't know how I thought I was going to cram in all the things I wanted to see and do into two days, but I tried my best. There were only a few things that got missed, but Charlene and I did all of the things that were the most important to us. It was spring, and so the weather was definitely not on our side, but we didn't let it stop us from doing the things we wanted to do. We were wet, and the fog took away our spectacular views, but we still had a fantastic time!! I wouldn't have changed anything about my last trip, except I would take more Advil for my aching feet, instead of leaving it in the hotel room. Duh...
This time around, we are driving there ourselves. Or, I should say, Brent is driving us there...lol! Being a non-driver, I feel bad about not being able to help out with the 9 hour journey, but I will lend my excellent navigational skills in exchange for that. We are looking at a 9 hour trip, plus extra time for resting and stretching, fuel for the car and for our tummies. We will be crossing the border at Gananoque, driving down through New York state through Watertown, Syracuse, and Binghamton. Then, we will cross into Pennsylavania, down to Scranton, then start heading east into New Jersey. Our destination is Newark, New Jersey. Wayyyyyy cheaper for hotels in Newark, and also easier to drive to. The search for a hotel was my first task as "Trip Planner Extraodinaire" Well....it took a few days of research, but I narrowed our choices down to the top 10 in my opinion, and the consensus was to go with choice #2 on the list- the Robert Treat Best Western. Apparently Robert Treat was the founder of Newark, and so the hotel is over 100 years old. It's very close to Penn Station, where we will take the train into Manhattan every day.
This trip is also a little bit longer, we are having 4 days in Manhattan, and 2 days of driving. Its a little easier to fit  everything into 4 days instead of 2.
We are opting to take a bus tour on a double decker bus with no roof, so we can see all the main sights in clear view, with a tour guide explaining things as we go. I am looking forward to this, as the other bus tour I took was in a covered bus with raincovered windows. Didn't make for very good pictures, but still better than nothing! The price of the tour is amazing, in a 48 hour time frame, we get-
     * tour of Lower and Midtown Manhattan- we can get on and off the bus at any stop to stay and look around
     * tour of Upper Manhattan and Harlem- also hop on and off
     * fully guided bus tour of Brooklyn
*fully guided boat tour of the harbor, including Statue of Liberty
     * fully guided night tour of Manhattan, to see all the sparkly lights!
     * free ticket to the Museum Of New York
Pretty good for $50!!!!  We would likely spend that much just in cabs and subways and buses to get to all of those things!!!  I love the fact that we can get off the bus and explore, then just get back on whenever we want- they run every 15-20 minutes or so. Awesome. Friggin Awesome.
One of the things I am anticipating the most is the 9/11 Memorial pools. These are two reflecting pools built in the footprints of the Twin Towers, where people can go and read the names of the souls lost that day, and to reflect. These pools and surrounding park space have been under construction for at least 5 years, and are stiill undergoing construction, as is most of the World Trade Center site. As a result of the construction, we had to book our timeslots, because they can only let a certain number of people onto the site at any given time. So, we were lucky enough to get spots on our last day there, as the timeslots are filling up very quickly. The general public has not been able to set foot on the grounds of the World Trade Center for 10 years, since that horrific day. I am honoured that I will be among the first to set foot there again. The memorial has only been open for 10 days as of today, and when we go, it will have been open for only 24 days. We are also going to visit the WTC Tribute Museum, the one run by the families. I visited this museum in April, and it was very moving to see the items on display- a crushed briefcase, a lone dust covered shoe, mangled hunks of steel beams, a piece of one of the planes, and of course, the walls and walls of photos of the victims.
As part of my navigator/tour director duties, I have been studying maps of Manhattan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and upstate New York. I've gotta say, New Jersey has the coolest names of cities and towns anywhere!!!  Parsippany...Secaucus...Orange...Kittatinny Mountain...Poconos( I know they are in Pennsylvania...close enough)...Rahway...Netcong...Whippanny...Hackensack...Weehawken....ok, this could go on until I clear the whole map...hehe
More to come....stay tuned!!

Boston 2014 Journal

I can't believe I haven't started a journal yet, I've known about this trip for 7 months already!! I guess I'd better start writing!!

Back in January my friend Michelle and I decided that this would be the year I finally got myself to Boston to visit her. She and I have been friends since 1990, when I placed an ad in the pen pals section of the now defunct Hockey Stars magazine. I received about 30 letters from other teens all over the world who shared my passion for hockey, and Steve Yzerman in particular.  Now, after almost 24 years, I am proud to say that I am still in touch with four friends. Michelle in Massachusetts, Sean in New Hampshire, Alek in New York, and Howie in New Jersey. I've already met most of them in person- Alek in 1993, Sean and Michelle in 2003, who all came here to visit me. Alek and I tried to meet up last time I went to NYC, but a death in his family prevented that. (Next time!!) Howie and I have had many phone conversations over the years, but we haven't met yet.

So, that's how my pen pal friends and I got started. It started out as letters back and forth, then phone calls, and visits, then as technology advanced, it turned into email, webcam chats, Messenger, now it's Facebook, and text messages. It's funny how we have evolved over the years.

Now, it's my turn to take the trip!! It's been a long time coming, It's going to be worth the wait!!

Since January I have been my usual travel agent dorky self, scouring the internet for information, asking Michelle a million questions, and starting to make my plans. I swear, I love the planning of a vacation just as much as the vacation itself!! Maybe I need a career change...

The first thing on my agenda...nope, not plane tickets, but Red Sox tickets!!! I knew I could get plane tickets any time, but Sox tickets are a different thing altogether. Since they are the current World Series Champions, getting tickets to see them wasn't going to be easy. So, after looking at their schedule, finding a home game that wasn't against the Blue Jays or Yankees (I didn't want to see the Jays there because I don't want to go to Fenway Park and root for the visitor LOL! And Yankee tickets are impossible to get because the rivalry is WICKED HUGE) Anyway, I found an afternoon game midweek, early in September so the weather was still nice, and that's how I decided which week to take my vacation. It's all about the baseball ;)

So, after some more research on Fenway Park, and their nifty 3D seat view feature, I picked the tickets, and bought them!!!  I was so very excited to have those :) I find myself looking at them every once in a while, with a grin on my face :)

Next thing to plan was getting there. I checked all of the possibilities- planes, trains, bus... And flying turned out to be the best option for me. I've only ever been on a plane twice before, we flew to England in 1986 to visit family. 28 years have passed since then, and boy has the aviation industry changed!! In my research of flights I delved into a whole new world of aviation, which I am positively fascinated by, and I am proud to call myself a planespotter! More on that in another journal...

I had few choices when it came to direct flights from Toronto to Boston Logan...Air Canada from Pearson or Porter Air from the island airport. I opted for Air Canada, going for the airline that's been around for over 80 years over the new guys. Price-wise they were about the same. Part of that was that I wanted to use Pearson too, due to my new fascination with aviation. I went to Toronto one afternoon specifically I go to the airport to see a certain plane come in...pretty groovy. Sorry...got sidetracked!

So, I became a frequent window shopper on Air Canada's website, checking flights, prices, and they have a myriad of other information on their site, really anything a traveller could ever need to know. It was super! After a few months of browsing and research, it was time to buy! I know to many people buying a plane ticket isn't a big deal, but to me, it was! I was pretty excited, my heart was pounding as I clicked through all the screens. Finally, I had my confirmation number, my seats picked out, travel insurance, and I was set!! I felt such a sense of accomplishment, doing something new and exciting!

After that, I had to back away from my plans a bit, I was getting too into it, and still had many months!!! The main things were taken care of, travel, accommodation, and baseball :) now I could relax a little and learn about New England and all it has to offer at a more relaxing pace.

The lists came out, and I am still going on them now, as I will be even once I get there. Lists of attractions in Boston, things outside of Boston, things in the other New England states, stores I want to shop in, landmarks to see, restaurants, you name it, I likely have a list for it.

One of the cool things I have planned is to have a visit with my other pen pal, Sean, who lives in New Hampshire, within driving distance! Sean had visited me before, but now I will be able to see the beauty of New Hampshire, which he has been describing to me for years. We are going to find me a mountain! I've never seen a real mountain before, a real pointy top mountain. I've seen a part of the Appalachians on the way to New Jersey, but they just look like huge rocky hills...not really the same. Impressive, but not the same. We are also planning to visit Costco, because I have to find a Costco wherever I go!

Well, I must get back to my lists and maps right now, I feel like I've been neglecting them! More to come...
